The Basement is one of Canberra's best venues for live music, holding a great variety of acts both local and interstate (and international!), the engineers are friendly and attentive and the bar staff are great. A great little eatery attached serves yummy night-food. Two stages allow festival type events, a real one-stop entertainment venue.
The Basement is everything you want in a gig venue. It's grungy, has great pub food (I had a Temple of the Dog), pool tables, and great staff (the guy who picks up the glasses is an awesome dude!). The one downside is that if you're not up the front when the band starts, you can't see much more than the bands' heads (see photo). It would be good if the stage was a little higher. That said, the sound was amazing! If I didn't live in Melbourne I'd be there more often! A++
Great option for a night out in Canberra.
Tasty meals with a good range of burgers. Band area packs a decent crowd with good acoustics. Whether you're wanting to rock out to a band or just hang out and shoot some pool with your mates The Basement delivers.
Always have fun at the Basement. Great bands, good sound, lovely staff.
Would be great if there was more than one working female toilet though! Would have been five stars otherwise.
Seen some amazing international bands here, and the local ones playing here are pretty tops as well.
The best place in Canberra for live metal and rock music. The first time I went here was earlier this year to see Voyager. Such a great performance, but it was totally packed out. Most recently I went there for Questfest, fantasy-themed metal festival and the crowds were much more manageable.
I have always thought the Basement in belco was great and regulary attend. Saw an act there last night after paying admission fee, which is modest and fine. But then you go and get a drink. The drink prices are crazy! I was buying a hard solo and a pint of beer for $30!!! Is this normal, or just me? I would expect venues to make 50 to 100% profit on booze. But paying $15 for a can of Hard solo is nuts! You buy a case of 10 for $45 at the shops. No wonder the venue had only a small crowd. If your going to charge like that, make admission to see live bands free and fill the joint!
While it does feel small at times, The Basement is Canberra's most consistent venue for metal.
Make sure to try the burgers from the bar, and get yourself to the front row of the concert with some hearing protection.
